February Classes

January Classes

Fun with Fabrics with Anne
Tuesday, January 3, 12:30-3:00 PM, $25
This is the date originally scheduled for a repeat of the November class incorporating fabric in our cards. However, we’ll be replacing the holiday-themed designs from that class with new ones, so in many ways, this isn’t really a repeat. We’ll use velvet, silk and cotton blends to create some all-occasion cards for winter giving.

Stamping 101 – Tips, Tricks & Techniques with Anne
Thursday, January 5, 9:30-11:30 AM, $25
This is not only a class for beginning stampers who wonder about which inks to use on which surface, etc., but it’s also designed to give you lots of hands-on practice so that you’re ready to tackle those special projects with confidence, knowing you have not only the basic skills, but also the knowledge to avoid many of the common mistakes beginners make. Take home a nifty wire-bound envelope booklet with pockets to store class handouts along with your practice samples. Class repeats weekly: January 11, 17, and 26. Check the schedule below for times, as they vary from date to date.

Rubber, Paper, Inks-Back to Basics with Helen
Thursday, January 5, 3:00-5:00 PM, $25
If you are a veteran or new to rubber stamping, this class will help brush up your skills. We’ll make the mysteries of inks and papers a bit easier and introduce tricks and tips to make your stamping successful and satisfying. Helen also gives her “10 Most Wanted Stamps” list. Class repeats weekly: January 7, 10, 13, 19, 21, and 26.

Winter Wishes with Anne
Thursday, January 5, 12:30-3:00 PM, $25
Although our focus was mainly on holiday cards in November and December, this class, originally offered in early December, featured more generic “thinking of you” messages. Both snowflakes and butterflies adorn cards crafted from the exquisite BoBunny “Snowfall” collection in shades of turquoise, sepia and white with lots of glitter and glimmer.

Mini Beginning Stamping Class with Debbie
Friday, January 6, 10:30-11:30 AM, $10
Come learn the very basics of stamping, embossing, paper cutting and card construction, in a one hour class. We will start by practicing stamping and embossing, discuss the different ink types and the papers to use them on. We will then make a card to take home, using the techniques we have learned. Class repeats weekly: January 12, 18, and 27.

Rubber, Paper, Inks – Back to Basics with Helen
Saturday, January 7, 10:00-12:00 PM, $25
See January 5th, above, for class details.

Windows on the World with Anne
Saturday, January 7, 10:30 AM-1:00 PM, $25
Interactive cards are always fun, and these invite the recipient to open a door or window for a peek at what’s on the other side. We’ll include some stamped images by Art Impressions designed just for this purpose, as well as other stamps and die-cut elements. Class will repeat on Thursday afternoon, January 19th.

Mists and Masks with Helen
Saturday, January 7, 1:00-3:00 PM, $25
Oh no! What spray mist should I use? This class will cover the properties of many different mists and how to get the best results with each one. We will also play with masks and stencils. Prepare to get a little ink on your hands, but all the artist background papers you create will be worth it.

Triple Play with Anne
MAKE & TAKE Monday, January 9, 1:00-3:00 PM, $7
Make a fun card comprised of three double-sided, die-cut shapes hinged with brads so that the recipient can slide them open one by one to reveal the embellishment and/or sentiment on each segment, and then nest them again to lie flat. The design is most commonly created with circles, but can be done with other shapes (like hearts for Valentine’s Day?) Class will be offered again “By Request Only” at the end of the month.

Rubber, Paper, Inks – Back to Basics with Helen
Tuesday, January 10, 6:00-8:00 PM, $25
See January 5th, above, for class details.

Stamping 101- Tips, Tricks and Techniques with Anne
Wednesday, January 11, 9:30-11:30 AM, $25
See January 5th, above, for class details.

Pressing out the Details – The Easy Way with Anne
Wednesday, January 11, 12:30-3:00 PM, $25
Repeated from December 10, this resist technique is a long-time favorite. However, we’ll take a slightly different approach which involves a bit less “elbow grease.” Instead of swirling and blending inks directly over our clear embossed images, we’ll use a lighter hand. Regular re-inkers and alcohol inks are applied with water brushes for a more painterly look. And to withstand the added moisture, we’ll use manila file folders as our background material, so the original images will have a warm honey color after the embossing powder is ironed away. The process can be a bit messy – but it’s always fun!

Rubber, Paper, Inks – Back to Basics with Helen
Friday, January 13, 3:00-5:00 PM, $25
See January 5th, above, for class details.

Easy Transfers with Helen
Friday, January 13, 6:00-8:00 PM, $25
Transfers give you the ability to take a printed image and superimpose it over other backgrounds or substrates, many you can’t run through your printer. But they can be tricky. This class will take the headaches out of 3 of the most successful techniques. We’ll use tape, Xylene blenders and sticky back canvas to create wonderful effects.

Return to Asia with Anne
Saturday, January 14, 10:30 AM-1:00 PM, $30
It seems a long time since we’ve offered a class specifically designed around Asian-inspired images. One reason for the enduring popularity of this art form is the wide range from the serenity of Japanese traditional art to the rich, colorful palette of Chinese textiles to more whimsical fairytale images of dragons and the like. We’ll try to incorporate as many of these different elements as time permits. Class will repeat on Tuesday, January 24th.

Showy, Snowy Owl with Kim
MAKE & TAKE Monday, January 16, 1:00-3:00 PM, $12
Impress your friends with a lovely, triple-layered shadowbox card featuring this ever popular bird. Although roughly an inch or so deep, the frame easily compresses to fit an A-2 envelope, thanks to its unique accordion-fold design. The realistically rendered owl is nested among glittery snowflakes and other wintry elements in soft shades of bronze, taupe, white and palest blue. As we’ve come to expect from Kim, the overall presentation is complete with a show-stopping combination of card and embellished envelope. Class will repeat on Monday, January 30th.

Altered Book Beginnings with Helen
Saturday, January 14, 1:00-3:30 PM, $25
Transform a previously unloved volume into A-R-T! Altered books are the perfect place to try new techniques or to begin art journaling. Using tools and supplies every artist and crafter have available (of course you’ll need more now) we will take a hardbound book on a journey of exploration. Bring your sense of fun and playfulness. You’ll also need a hardbound book with strong non-glossy pages. Goodwill, library sales, and yard sales are all perfect sources to find books for this project; size does not matter. Also, bring a craft knife, cutting mat, ruler and scissors.

Stamping 101- Tips, Tricks and Techniques with Anne
Tuesday, January 17, 2:00-4:00 PM, $25
See January 5th, above, for details.

With One Stamp with Anne
Tuesday, January 17, 6:00-8:30 PM, $20
You may recall as part of our “Christmas in July” offerings, we used the Penny Black “peace” stamp to create a variety of cards with a single image in common. This time we’ll experiment with one of Anne’s favorites, the “scripted leaf” by Christine Adolph for Stampington (#C8426,) to see how many different looks we can achieve with that one elegant, timeless image. Class will repeat on Wednesday afternoon, February 15th.

Rubber, Paper, Inks – Back to Basics with Helen
Thursday, January 19, 10:00-12:00 PM, $25
See January 5th, above, for class details.

Composition – 6 Breakable Rules with Helen
Thursday, January 19, 1:00-3:00 PM, $25
Do you ever look at your card, scrapbook page or a collage you’ve done and thought that something wasn’t quite right, but couldn’t figure it out? Learn these few “rules” of composition and a few ways to help you look at your work with new eyes. Bring a few unfinished pieces you are working on, and we’ll create a few in class.

See January 5th, above, for class details.

Valentine Hearts & Flowers with Anne
Saturday, January 21, 10:30 AM-1:00 PM, $25
Hopefully, you got a head start on your Valentine list by picking up a few of the designs offered in the Winter Card Fest in November. This is the first of two NEW classes focused on this special holiday (second only to Christmas in terms of the volume of mail it generates.) As the name suggests, the themes are traditional ones incorporating lace, flowers and other more feminine elements. Next week’s class (see January 26) will be more eclectic, incorporating less traditional color combinations and a couple of designs without frills, suitable for the guys. Both classes repeat in early February -- Friday the 3rd and Saturday the 4th, respectively.

Essential Techniques – Back to Basics with Helen
Saturday, January 21, 1:00-3:00 PM, $25
Now that you are familiar with inks and papers, it’s time to move on to the techniques that you will use over and over, no matter you stamping style. Masking, sponging, coloring, layering, resists, art mediums and even kissing! (stamp kissing that is). We’ll touch on all of these and more.

Elegant Geisha with Anne
MAKE & TAKE Monday, January 23, 1:00-2:30 PM, $8
Make this beautiful Asian inspired card incorporating a double-embossing technique. We’ll run a combination of background and detailed embossing folders through our Cuttlebug as well as using both heat and dry embossing techniques to create a lovely A-7 card. For those of you who would prefer a Valentine theme, you may choose an alternative A-6 design. See “By Request” on January 28th for a second opportunity to make this project.

Return to Asia with Anne

Even if you’ve never worked with this versatile material, you will enjoy creating interesting pages for journaling, pictures, or even to cut up for other projects! We will use papers, inks, stamps, and metal embellishments to create interest and a start on your 6 page book.

Valentine Collection II with Anne
Thursday, January 26, 12:30-3:00 PM, $25
As described above (see “Hearts & Flowers”) this collection includes designs for both ladies and gents in somewhat less traditional color schemes (who says valentines have to be pink or red and fluffy?) In fact, not all hearts are necessarily even valentines. You might change the greeting to “happy birthday” thereby making the design do double duty. Class will repeat on Saturday, February 4th.

Distress Inks and Stains with Helen
Saturday, January 28, 10:00 AM-12:00 PM, $25
Ranger’s Distress Inks and the NEW stains will become your favorites (if they aren’t already) after seeing how many easy and beautiful ways they can be used. We will create multiple tags ready for stamping and collaging.

Configuration Shadow Box with Helen
Saturday, January 28, 1:00-4:00 PM, $35
This is your chance to work 3-D without stress! Tim Holtz created configurations boxes to coax all of us to “think outside the box” by working inside the box! Since the hardest part is deciding on a theme, we will use Graphic 45’s Wizard of Oz papers and unusual dimensional embellishments to make our boxes. You will need to bring a Tim Holtz configurations box and anything small and Oz! You can get yours at Main Street Stamp and Stationery.

By Request Only with Anne
Saturday, January 28, 10:30 AM-3:00 PM
As usual, the last Saturday of the month is dedicated to those of you who can’t attend Monday afternoon classes. This month, you may make one or both of Anne’s MAKE & TAKEs, including the Triple Play card (see January 9, $7) and/or the Elegant Geisha (see January 23, $8).

Alcohol Inks with Helen
Monday, January 30, 1:00-3:00 PM, $25
What’s the big deal about “alcohol inks”? What do they do that regular inks can’t? When would I use them? This class answers those questions by experimenting with different techniques and surfaces.

Showy, Snowy Owl with Kim
Monday, January 30, 1:00-3:00 PM, $12

We’ve all admired those gorgeous Italian marbled papers most often found on the inside covers of fine books. We’ll try our hand at making some marbled papers of our own, with both the more traditional carrageen bath technique and the copycat shaving cream version. Both techniques can produce some lovely patterns that you’ll want to use as backgrounds for your cards, or to cover small books, etc.

Double Tri-Shutter Card with Anne
MAKE & TAKE Tuesday, February 21, 1:00-2:30 PM, $10
Because of the Monday holiday, we’ve shifted our M&T to Tuesday. This is one of those cards which the recipient will no doubt want to display on a shelf or mantle. When unfolded it stands about 20” wide revealing photos, sentiments and/or decorative papers for color and interest. While the resulting card may look complicated, the actual engineering is deceptively simple. Make a few score lines, two basic cuts, and opposing accordion folds and voila!
